Sandalwood essential oil comes from the Sandalwood evergreen tree. It is an expensive essential oil because it is rare, difficult to produce, and smells heavenly. It is extracted from the wood of the fully matured tree, which takes between 30 and 60 years to reach full maturity.
Sandalwood has been used for thousands of years, by the Indians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and many others. The Egyptians used it in embalming, the others used it for meditation, and for building temples. Today, as the tree is close to extinction, its only use is for distillation of oil.
When used as an essential oil, Sandalwood has a calming effect when used in a diffuser. Its beautiful scent alone is enough to make you feel fabulous. Certain yogis recommend use of the scent of Sandalwood for Tantric practices.
In lotions and creams, Sandalwood essential oil can ease dry skin. In steam, Sandalwood essential oil can ease chest infections, congestion, and sore throats. In the bath, Sandalwood essential oil can ease nervous tension and irritability.
