Camphor Essential Oil comes from the camphor tree, native to Taiwan, China and Japan. In order to produce the essential oil, the camphor tree must be at least 50 years old. It is said that camphor trees can live up to one thousand years. Only white camphor is used for the essential oil, since yellow or brown camphor oil contains safrole, which could be carcinogenic. Enchanted Works ONLY uses white camphor essential oil.
DO NOT EVER USE ESSENTIAL OILS INTERNALLY If it irritates your skin, just think what it would do for your insides.
Camphor essential oil can be highly toxic and a skin irritant so don't use it on the skin without serious dilution. Pregnant women and epileptics should avoid use of camphor essential oils. To dilute for normal use, dilute 1 drop to approximately 6ml of carrier oil. You can also use 5 to 10 drops in the bathtub. It can be used in vapor form to help with respiration and with colds and flu. Camphor is one of the ingredients in Vicks VapoRub, which helps it to break through congestion and dry things up.
For really nasty sinus headaches, or to clear out congestion, you can also "steam" your essential oils. For example, Kestra uses a kettle of boiling water, poured in a large bowl, add one drop of camphor essential oil and one drop of eucalyptus essential oil, then put a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale slowly and deeply. Take care not to get too close to the water and steam (if it hurts, don't do it, essentially) and breathe slowly and deeply. The camphor used this way will also help clear your skin of acne.
In lotions or creams (diluted of course), camphor essential oils can be used to care for oily skin. It can be used in carrier oils as an insect repellant.
